Culture of Kashmir

The culture of Kashmiri is a sundry combination and highly subjective to northern South Asian as well as Central Asian culture. Along with its picturesque attractiveness, Kashmir is famed for its cultural inheritance;

it unites Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist philosophies and has occupied complex culture depraved on the principles of humanism and patience. Costumes: The main costume of Kashmir is Poot and Pherans, Muslim women wears till the knees and the Hindu women wears till the feet. They were the same design of cloths but vary in cotton and wool in summer and winter. The dress worn by a men and women looks same except loose pajamas which are worn by men. Skull cap with a bone of red colour is worn by Hindu women and skull cap with a bone of white colour is worn by Muslim women; whereas men wear turbans as a sign of morality. Women of definite class can be seen in sarees and men in trousers and coats.

Cuisine: The cuisine of Kashmir is based on the earliest custom of this region which continues even today. The main prominent item in today's Kashmir cuisine is mutton, of which there are more than 30 varieties. Kashmiris are heavy tea drinkers, they are of fond of green tea and a special tea made in Kashmir known as Kawah. Kashmiri Pulao is a well renowned dish among all vegetarians and non- vegetarians. Spices, curd, cardamoms etc. are the daily ingredients of their cuisine. Chocolate Barfi, Sund panjeeri, Kalaadi (processed cheese) and Patisa are some of the sweets and Rajma (with rice) are some dishes which are eaten in a huge quantity.

Music and Dance: Varieties of dance and song in this place are influenced from Iran and Persia. The music in this area is known as Sufiana kalam. The musical instruments used in here are sitar, Dukra, Nagara and santoor (made in Iran). Besides Sufiana, Chakri and Rouff are other musical which are sunged in Kashmir. Geetru is displayed in the area of Dogra Pahari of Jammu valley in festivals and other occasions. Rouff is a traditional dance which is performed mainly during Ramzan and Id by the women of Kashmir. Occasionally, sad songs are performed in which female dancers integrate artistic dance activities.

Festivals: The people of this region celebrate every festival with great enthusiasm and make it into a grand success. The various festivals celebrated in here includes: Bahu Mela, Purmandal Mela in February/March, Jhiri Mela & Navratri Festival in the month of October/November and Urs which is celebrated throughout the year. Apart from this Lohri and Baisakhi are also celebrated. 

Language & Literature: Kashmiri (Aryan influence) is the official language of Kashmir and is widely spoken, even though many other Indo-Aryan languages are also common. Kashmiri literature has a wealthy past stretching back to hundreds of years. Kuntala, Ruyata are noted for legendary condemnation and Matrigupta and Shilana were renowned Kashmiri writers.

Arts & Crafts: Silk carpets, Pashmina shawls, Kashmir rug, woven carpets and Cashmere wool are some of the world class arts of Jammu and Kashmir. Shikara are well decorated wooden boats which are renowned for its architectural technique. 

Hence, the culture of Kashmir has a union in multiplicity.
